About Somers

Somers grew up along the old Green Bay Road, the 1832 mail and stagecoach road between Chicago and Green Bay. In August 1837 the three Kellogg brothers came from New England by ox team, raised six log cabins in six days, and by 1840 built the first Methodist church building in Wisconsin. The town, first called Pike, took the name Somers in 1851, and near Lake Michigan the Berryville farms grew so many strawberries that the area was named for them. Today families hike the wooded ravines of Petrifying Springs Park along the Pike River, peek into old schoolhouses and the first town hall at Hawthorn Hollow, and look at the stars through its observatory telescope.
