About Stillwater
Stillwater began in 1843, when four partners started the Stillwater Lumber Company on the St. Croix River, and the name came from the calm water near the town center. In 1848 a meeting held at the corner of Myrtle and Main streets began the process of making Minnesota a state, which is why people call the town the birthplace of Minnesota. Logs floated down the river to its sawmills, and Lumberjack Days has marked that past since the 1930s. Today people come for the lift bridge, which now carries walkers and bikers, the riverfront and its museums.
