About Stratford
Stratford began in Marathon County in 1891, when the railroad was extended to the spot and the town was laid out. Lumberman W.D. Connor started it as a company town for his lumber business, and it was named after Stratford-upon-Avon in England. A postcard from 1908 shows dirt streets lined with wooden boardwalks, houses and farm buildings, and the village was incorporated in 1910. Today Stratford is a small village whose Tigers football teams have won eight state titles, and families gather at the library branch for story time and book clubs.
