About Marathon City
Marathon City began with German workers from Pittsburgh, who formed a homestead society in 1856 and traveled up the Wisconsin and Rib rivers in 1857 to farm the woods here. The village took its name from the ancient Battle of Marathon, and it grew with a grist mill on the Rib River, a brewery, sawmills and, in 1891, the railroad. The twin red brick steeples of St. Mary's Catholic Church, built in 1911, still rise over the hillside, and dairy farms and ginseng fields fill the country around it. Today families come to the Marathon City Heritage Center on Main Street, the branch library on Washington Street, and Marathon Fun Days at Veteran's Park every Labor Day weekend.
