About Spencer
Spencer began in 1874 at a branch of the Wisconsin Central Railway, on ground between the Spencer Marsh and the McMillan Marsh. It was first called Waltham, then Irene, after the wife of a settler who built a sawmill, and at last Spencer, after the town of Spencer in Massachusetts. Lumber and manufacturing helped the village grow, and a library was started here as early as 1875. Today Spencer is a country village where Highways 13 and 98 meet, with a branch of the county library, a Northcentral Technical College campus, and the LuCille Tack Center for the Arts, a 501-seat theater beside the high school.
