About Colby
Colby began in 1872, when the Wisconsin Central Railroad stopped laying track here for the season and a small camp of about 100 people grew up beside the line. The stop was named for Charles L. Colby, whose father Gardner Colby led the railroad. In 1885 Joseph Steinwand, working at his father's cheese factory just outside town, made a soft, mild new cheese that took the town's name, and a marker downtown tells the story. Today families come out for Colby Cheese Days each July, with a parade and free cheese, and for the June Dairy Breakfast on a local farm. The Colby Community Library, opened in 2017 with a copper-colored roof and an outdoor amphitheater, and the Rural Arts Museum's old depot keep the town's past close at hand.
