About Superior

Superior grew up at the Head of the Lakes, the western end of Lake Superior, on Ojibwe homeland; the Ojibwe name for it means 'at the old town.' Its first log cabin went up in 1853 on the Nemadji River, and the town was platted in 1854 by people who hoped a railroad to the Pacific would end there. The railroads finally came in the 1880s, and grain, coal and lumber businesses and shipyards followed; one yard built whaleback freighters like the Meteor. Superior became a city in 1889. Today people tour Fairlawn Mansion and the Meteor museum ship, visit the Wisconsin Point lighthouse at the end of a long sand bar, and gather on neighbors' porches for summer Porchfest concerts.
