About Richfield
Richfield sits in the rolling hills and kettle lakes of the Kettle Moraine, about 21 miles northwest of Milwaukee. Its first settlers bought land in 1841, and German families, many from Hesse-Darmstadt, soon cleared farms and built the first church, St. Hubertus, in 1845. In 1856 Johann Messer put a sawmill on Coney Creek, and his son Andrew added a grist mill beside it in the 1870s; the Messer/Mayer Mill still stands in the Richfield Historical Park. Long a farm town of wheat and then dairy, Richfield became a village in 2008. Families come to the park for maple syrup day in spring, the Thresheree and Harvest Festival in September and a lantern-lit Luminary Walk in November.
