About Oshkosh
Oshkosh is named for the Menominee leader Chief Oshkosh, whose name meant claw, and it sits on the Fox River between Lake Butte des Morts and Lake Winnebago. Fur traders came as early as 1818, and after it became a city in 1853 its sawmills grew so many that it was called the Sawdust Capital of the World. Lumber families left grand homes behind, and two are now open to everyone: the Sawyer mansion that holds the Oshkosh Public Museum and the Paine Art Center and Gardens. Each July the town fills with planes and visitors for EAA AirVenture, and in summer families hear Waterfest concerts by the river and shop the Saturday farmers market downtown.
