About Menasha
Menasha takes its name from a Menominee word for 'little island,' and a Ho-Chunk village once stood on Doty Island, which the city now shares with Neenah. After treaties opened the land for sale in 1835, James Doty and Curtis Reed laid out the town on the channel north of the island in 1848, and a year later they won the Fox River's shipping channel for Menasha. Wooden ware and then paper mills grew up along the water, and Menasha became a city in 1874. Today families walk and bike the trails along the river and Lake Winnebago, catch summer concerts in Smith Park, and gather in Curtis Reed Square each December to watch the town tree light up.
