About Wheaton
Wheaton began in 1884 on a new railroad line built north from Ortonville, and it was named for Daniel Thompson Wheaton, a railroad surveyor. Two years later it became the seat of Traverse County, and its depot was the town's door to the wider world, bringing mail and travelers and shipping out the area's farm crops. The town sits on the Mustinka River near the spot where Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota meet, close to Lake Traverse and its walleye fishing. Today people visit the county history museum in the old 1906 depot, go to the Traverse County Fair each August, and gather at the community library and the town pool.
