About Ortonville
Ortonville sits on a hillside at the southern tip of Big Stone Lake, right on the South Dakota border, above the start of the Minnesota River. Cornelius K. Orton laid out the town in 1872 and ran a trading post, and the railroad arrived in 1879. It became the county seat, and in 1931 the town held its first Corn Festival, with a corn-eating contest that later drew thousands of people. Today neighbors fish for perch and walleye from more than ten miles of public shore, play the 18-hole city golf course and gather each August for Cornfest.
