About Appleton
Appleton was laid out in 1872 on the Pomme de Terre River, the same year the railroad arrived from Benson, and it was named for its founder's hometown of Appleton, Wisconsin. A flour mill ran on the riverbank for nearly a hundred years, and the town's City Hall, built in 1895 with an auditorium upstairs, is one of the few grand 1800s buildings in rural western Minnesota. In 1946 the town renamed its streets for local soldiers who died in World War II, so nearly every street is a memorial. Today people paddle and tube the river, camp in the city campground, ride the off-highway vehicle park and gather for Applefest each September and the Swift County Fair each August.
