About Amherst
Amherst grew up along the Tomorrow River in Portage County: John Hillstrom, its first known settler, came in 1851, and Adam Uline gave the place its name in 1853, after General Jeffery Amherst. A dam on the river made the 48-acre Mill Pond, which once powered a feed mill and is now a quiet spot for fishing for northern pike and panfish. The fair has been held here since 1869, and every July it still brings 4-H and FFA shows to the Portage County Fairgrounds, built in 1917. Today the village keeps its small-town feel, with shops on Main and Christy streets, riverside parks, the Lettie W. Jensen Library and the Tomorrow River schools on one campus.
