About Winneconne
Winneconne grew up around 1849 as a pioneer settlement on the Wolf River, in the middle of the Wolf Chain of lakes between Lake Poygan, Lake Winneconne and Lake Butte des Morts. Early sawmills, gristmills, shipyards and commercial fishing kept the river busy, and the village has long called itself a hunting and fishing paradise, with bass tournaments still based here. In 1967 the state left Winneconne's name off its new highway map, so the village playfully seceded from Wisconsin for a day before making peace with the governor. Today families cast from the fishing piers on both sides of the river, visit the historical society's museum buildings on summer Sundays, and come out every July for Sovereign State Days.
