About Abbotsford
Abbotsford grew up where two lines of the Wisconsin Central Railroad met: the north line came through the forest in the 1870s, and in 1879 the railroad picked this spot for its junction and rail yard. First called Colby Junction, it was renamed in 1880 for Edwin H. Abbott of the railroad, became a village in 1894 and a city in 1965. It calls itself Wisconsin's First City because it comes first on the alphabetical list, and it sits where Highways 29 and 13 cross, in Clark and Marathon counties. The city is proud of its dairy-farm roots, and since 1971 thousands of people have come for its lighted Christmas Parade on the first Saturday in December.
