About Afton
The first settlers came to this bend of the St. Croix River in 1837, and the village was platted in 1855. It was named for the poem Afton Water by Robert Burns; before that it was called Catfish Bar, for a sandbar in the river. The 1867 Cushing Hotel still stands in the old village, and a former church there is now the Afton Historical Museum. Each September the Town Square Park fills with artists and makers for Afton Art in the Park.
