About Aitkin
Aitkin began in 1870 when the Northern Pacific Railroad reached a spot near where the Ripple River meets the Mississippi, taking the place of an older river trading stop called Lexington. The city and county are named for William Aitken, a fur trader with the American Fur Company. Logging and riverboats brought newcomers from Ireland, Germany, Scotland and Scandinavia, and later the town turned to farming, with a creamery and a turkey plant. Today it is the county seat and a lake-country town, known for Riverboat Heritage Days each August and the World Famous Fish House Parade, when ice-fishing houses roll down the street the day after Thanksgiving.
