About Nisswa
Nisswa started out as Smiley Township in 1900 and took its new name when it became a village in 1908; the name comes from an Ojibwe word meaning 'in the middle,' since the town sits between Clark, Nisswa and Roy lakes. Lakes surround it, Gull Lake and Lake Hubert among them, and its shops and resorts have long made it a summer stop in the Brainerd Lakes Area. The old Northern Pacific depot downtown is now a history museum beside a pioneer village, and the old railroad bed is now the Paul Bunyan State Trail. Every summer Wednesday, people line up downtown to race turtles, a Nisswa tradition for more than 60 years.
