About Weyauwega
Weyauwega, which people call 'Wega' for short, is said to take its name from a native word meaning 'here we rest', since travelers once stopped here between two rivers to carry their canoes. Fur traders put up the first small building, the town was founded in 1856, and farms and dairies grew up all around it. The Waupaca County Fair has been held at the fairgrounds on the east end of town since 1874, and Horse and Buggy Days, with a parade and music, has honored the old horse-and-buggy days since 1961. Today families swim at the park's man-made lake, walk the old Yellowstone Trail route through downtown, and catch plays, concerts and a film festival at the Gerold Opera House.
