About De Pere
Long before De Pere had its name, thousands of people from several tribes gathered here to fish at the last rapids of the Fox River, on the homeland of the Menominee. In 1671 the Jesuit Claude Allouez started a mission at the rapids, and the French called the spot Rapides des Peres, the rapids of the fathers. A water-power company platted the town in 1836, the towns on the east and west banks grew up side by side, and in 1890 they joined into one city. Today families walk along the Fox by the old lock and dam, shop the cream-brick blocks along Broadway, and pack the riverfront for the Celebrate De Pere festival over Memorial Day weekend.
