About Atwater
Atwater was laid out in 1869 and named for E. D. Atwater, a railroad official; its post office opened in 1870 and the town was incorporated in 1876. In 1904 the Hotel Atwater went up downtown, a two-story brick hotel with 22 guest rooms, steam heat and running water, built to bring in trade. That hotel is now on the National Register of Historic Places and holds the city offices, the police department and the public library. Today Atwater sits on U.S. Highway 12 with brick shop buildings along Atlantic Avenue, a city park downtown, a local history museum, and an elementary school a short walk from downtown, part of the Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City district.
