About Spicer
Spicer sits on Green Lake, a big lake of more than 5,500 acres that was named in the 1850s for the green color of its water. The town was platted in 1886 and named for John M. Spicer, who owned the land, and a post office opened the same year. Spicer's own summer home and farm by the lake, from the early 1900s, is on the National Register of Historic Places, a reminder that Green Lake has long been a place for summer getaways. Today people launch boats on the lake, ride the paved Glacial Lakes State Trail through town, and gather each January for Winterfest, when an ice castle and a village of fish houses go up on the lake.
