About Dassel
Dassel was laid out in 1869 along the railroad and named for Bernard Dassel, a railroad official, and it became a town in 1878. In 1937 a local feed-yeast company began buying rye that farmers had thrown away because it carried ergot, a fungus that can also be made into medicine. As Universal Laboratories, it supplied most of the ergot grown in the United States during World War II. Its old building on 1st Street North is now the Dassel History Center and Ergot Museum, which tells the stories of ergot and seed corn. Each Labor Day weekend the town fills up for Red Rooster Days, with a parade, a bike ride, fireworks and a big chicken barbecue.
