About Dodgeville
Dodgeville began in 1827, when Henry Dodge, his family and about 40 lead miners set up camp here and built a cabin and a smelter. Miners from Cornwall, England, followed, and their stonework still shows in the town, most of all in the 1859 Iowa County Courthouse, the oldest courthouse still in use in Wisconsin. When the lead ran out, Dodgeville became a farm and dairy town and the county seat. Today families walk six blocks of old Iowa Street storefronts, ride the Military Ridge Trail, and swim and camp at Governor Dodge State Park just north of town.
