About Battle Creek-Highwood
Battle Creek-Highwood is St. Paul's District 1, the southeast corner of the city, made up of Battle Creek, Conway, Eastview, Highwood Hills and Sunray. French-speaking fur trade families built cabins and small farms by Pigs Eye Lake around 1838, and the area joined St. Paul by 1887. In the 1880s developers laid out Burlington Heights on the river bluffs, and it took the name Highwood from its railroad station; Eastview was platted in the 1950s, when most of the district filled in. Today it feels almost suburban, with more than 1,000 acres of lakes, woods and wetlands, including Battle Creek Regional Park, which grew from a 1925 land gift to 846 acres and once had a famous ski jump.
