About West Side

The West Side is the one part of St. Paul on the west bank of the Mississippi, which is how it got its name, even though it sits south of downtown. Its low river flats flooded often, and many of the first Mexican families in Minnesota settled there among other newcomers. The Riverview Library, a Carnegie library, opened in 1916 to help immigrant neighbors learn. Today people picnic and bike at Harriet Island Regional Park across the river from downtown, use the Riverview Library on George Street and cheer for the Humboldt Hawks.
