About Dayton's Bluff

Dayton's Bluff rises on the east bank of the Mississippi, and its name honors Lyman Dayton, a land and railroad man who built a home on the bluff in the 1850s. Long before that, Indigenous people built burial mounds on its highest point, and six still look out over the river in Wicaḣapi, the park long called Indian Mounds. Mills on Phalen Creek and a railroad along East Seventh Street brought jobs, and many German families built handsome houses with river views. Today neighbors walk the bluff-top park, visit the Dayton's Bluff Library on East Seventh and live among the old homes of the Dayton's Bluff Historic District.
