About Belleville
Belleville grew up where the Sugar River could turn a mill: John Frederick built a dam and sawmill there in 1845, then a grist mill, and by 1850 he and John Mitchell had laid out a village named after his hometown of Belleville, Ontario. A village green, now Library Park, was set aside in 1851, and in 1894 a two-story cream brick village hall rose in its middle, serving over the years as firehouse, jail and library. The park has hosted graduations, band concerts, Fourth of July picnics and ice cream socials for generations. Today the village straddles Dane and Green counties, and families turn out for the UFO Days parade each fall, the Community Picnic and fireworks each August, and story time at the new library on Park Street.
