About New Glarus
New Glarus began in 1845, when poor families from the canton of Glarus in Switzerland sailed to America and walked the last miles to land their scouts had bought along the Little Sugar River. The settlers turned to dairy farming, and by 1905 there were 22 cheese factories around the village. When the big milk plant closed in 1962, the town leaned on its Swiss roots, with chalet-style buildings, red geraniums in window boxes and Swiss flags along the streets. Every summer people still gather for Volksfest, a Swiss independence day picnic held since 1929, and every Labor Day weekend neighbors put on the Wilhelm Tell play, as they have since 1938. Today families ride bikes on the Sugar River State Trail, which follows the old railroad line south from the 1887 depot.
