About Monticello
In Monticello, a water-powered woolen mill opened on the Little Sugar River in 1866 and made Monticello blankets, cloth and yarn for nearly a hundred years; its 1868 limestone warehouse still stands after the mill burned in 1950. The village was incorporated in 1891. Today the Badger State Trail and the Sugar River State Trail cross in Monticello, and a few miles north the Badger trail runs through the 1887 Stewart Tunnel, 1,200 feet long and unlit. The local historical society keeps a free museum in the old Woelffer Drug Store on Main Street, and the chamber's Winterfest fills the village with a lantern walk, Santa visits and lit trees in Montesian Park.
