About Monroe

Monroe is the county seat of Green County, and its old downtown is built around a courthouse square, where the county's first courthouse opened in 1844. The city calls itself a community founded on farming and Swiss heritage, and its award-winning cheesemaking has earned it the nickname 'Cheese Capital of the USA.' Since 1914 the town has thrown Cheese Days on the Square every other September, with polkas, cheese tasting, a carnival and a two-hour parade. Today families come to the Square for the farmers market and summer concerts, watch July 4th fireworks at Twining Park, see shows at the Monroe Arts Center in an old brick church, and ride the Badger State Trail.
