About Cokato
Cokato's name comes from a Dakota word meaning in the middle, because it sat in the middle of the Big Woods. Settlers came in 1858, the railroad arrived in 1869, and many families came from Sweden and Finland, so it is still known as a Swedish and Finnish town. Canning factories packed sweet corn here for more than a hundred years. Every August since 1950 the Corn Carnival fills Peterson Park with rides, a parade and free buttered corn on the cob, and the free Cokato Museum and Akerlund photo studio share the town's history all year.
