About Greenwood
Greenwood grew up on the Black River, where loggers cut white pine in the 1840s and a small mill town took shape, called Eatonville for a time. The village was platted in 1871 and became a city in 1891, the same year the railroad arrived, and by 1918 its work had turned from lumber to dairy, with a creamery and a station that coated area cheese in wax for shipping. Downtown, a white Peace Memorial from 1937 stands beside the 1934 City Hall, and the Branstiter Museum lets visitors walk a boardwalk past 17 old storefronts from the town's past. Today families fish and canoe from Clark County Park on the river, play ball at Scherer Athletic Park, and turn out each September for the End of Summer Fest.
