About Coleraine
Coleraine was built from scratch around 1906 as a model mining town by John C. Greenway, the superintendent of U.S. Steel's Oliver Iron Mining Company on the western Mesabi Iron Range, and it was named for the company's president, Thomas F. Cole. Unlike rough mining camps, it got wide paved streets, a brick business district, a lakeside park with gardens, a Carnegie library, a log church and a grand school, and it became known as the gem city of the Mesabi Range. Ski jumping came early too: Coleraine hosted national ski tournaments in 1906 and 1910 on a jump overlooking Trout Lake. Today the town of about 2,000 sits on the north shore of Trout Lake, where people fish, swim at Cotton Park, ride the Mesabi Trail, ski at Mt. Itasca and gather for summer band concerts in Longyear Park.
