About Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids is named for the 3.5-mile rapids on the Mississippi River, the farthest point steamboats could reach in the late 1800s. It grew as a logging town, since the river carried logs to market, and the Blandin Paper Mill opened in 1902. Judy Garland was born here in 1922, and her birthplace is now a museum. Today it is the Itasca County seat of about 11,100 people, with a state history center on logging and the Tall Timber Days festival each summer.
