About Como
Como is the St. Paul neighborhood wrapped around Como Lake, between Snelling Avenue and Dale Street. Dakota people knew the lake long before settlers came, and an early farmer, Charles Perry, named it after Lake Como near his birthplace in the Alps. In 1873 the city bought land around the lake for a park, and parks chief Frederick Nussbaumer filled it with gardens, a zoo that began in 1897 with three deer, and a glass conservatory that opened in 1915. Today neighbors walk the 1.67-mile path around the lake, rent paddleboats and canoes, ride the 1914 carousel, and visit the zoo and conservatory for free all year.
