About North End

The North End grew up around Rice Street, an old fur-trade trail that became a busy shopping street served first by horsecars and then electric streetcars. Railroads along its southern edge brought jobs, and families from Germany, Bohemia, Hungary, Romania and Ireland settled here; the blocks around St. Bernard's Church were nicknamed Little Bavaria. Newer neighbors from Hmong, Somali and Karen families have made it one of St. Paul's most diverse neighborhoods. People gather at the Rice Street Library and, each September, at the Marydale Festival for art, music, food and kids' activities.
