About Frogtown
Frogtown, the Thomas-Dale area just north of University Avenue, was settled between 1860 and 1880 by railroad workers who wanted homes near the tracks and the Jackson Street shops. Polish, Scandinavian, German and Irish families built small wood and brick houses, and the name likely comes from the marshes, and the many frogs, that were here before the land was filled. University Avenue through Frogtown is now known as Little Mekong, lined with Hmong, Vietnamese and other immigrant-owned shops and restaurants. The Green Line light rail stops at Western, Dale and Victoria, and the old Jackson Street Roundhouse is now a railroad museum.
