About Hamline-Midway
Hamline-Midway is named for Hamline University and for sitting about midway between downtown St. Paul and downtown Minneapolis. Settlers came in the 1850s, Hamline opened its St. Paul campus here in 1880, and streetcars reached University Avenue in 1890, so most of the homes went up between 1900 and 1930. Railroads shaped its edges, from the Minnesota Transfer Railway on the west to the northern rail shops that later became Energy Park and Bandana Square. Today Snelling Avenue is the main street, the Green Line runs along University Avenue, and neighbors gather at the Hamline Midway Library and in parks like Hamline Park and Newell Park.
