About Thief River Falls
Thief River Falls is named for the falls where the Thief River meets the Red Lake River, and the town site was set out in 1887 before it became a city in 1896. Trains and rivers built it: the Soo Line came through in 1904, and an old Soo Line engine still sits outside City Hall, which was once the depot. Local inventors and companies grew here too, including the Steiger tractor in the 1950s and Digi-Key Electronics in 1972. Today people walk the River Walk, watch hockey, and come out for RiverFest, Everybody's Market and the Great American Block Party on LaBree Avenue.
