About Darlington
Darlington began with a log house in 1836 and a little village called Centre, laid out in 1847 beside the Pecatonica River, and it took the name of landowner Joshua Darling in 1869. The railroad arrived in 1856, and the next year Darlington became the seat of Lafayette County. Its stone courthouse at the top of Main Street, finished in 1907, is the only one in Wisconsin paid for by a single man's gift, and movie crews filmed courtroom scenes for Public Enemies there in 2008. The town calls itself the Pearl of the Pecatonica, since people once dug river clams to make pearl buttons. Today families camp and bike along the river, paddle in the Canoe Festival each June, and head to the Lafayette County Fair in July.
