About Mineral Point
Mineral Point began in 1827, when settlers came for the lead ore lying close to the surface, and it soon became the center of lead mining in what is now Wisconsin. Miners from Cornwall in England brought their skills here, and by 1845 about half the town had Cornish roots; their stone and timber cottages still stand at Pendarvis. In 1836 the town hosted the swearing-in of the first governor of the Wisconsin Territory. Later, in the 1930s, two artists began saving the old stone houses, and the town grew into an artists' colony. Today people walk High and Commerce streets past galleries and studios, eat Cornish pasties, and come back each fall for the Cornish Festival and the Fall Art Tour.
