About Downtown

Downtown St. Paul grew up on the bluffs above the Mississippi River, and its two oldest parks, Rice Park and Mears Park, were given to the city in 1849, before Minnesota was a state. On the east side, Lowertown's brick warehouses from the railroad days now hold apartments and restaurants, and the Union Depot, where trains and the Green Line still stop. The State Capitol stands on downtown's north edge, and theaters, museums and the Central Library circle Rice Park. People come downtown for Saints baseball at CHS Field, hockey at the arena, the St. Paul Farmers Market and the Winter Carnival in Rice Park.
