About Summit-University

Summit-University runs from grand Summit Avenue north to University Avenue, and it filled with homes in the 1880s and 1890s once streetcars made its steep hills easy to reach. Mansions rose near Summit Avenue and Cathedral Hill, while smaller houses and corner shops grew along Selby Avenue and the streetcar lines. For much of the 1900s the Rondo area here was the heart of St. Paul's Black community, and its story is honored every July at Rondo Days and at the Rondo Commemorative Plaza on old Rondo Avenue. Today neighbors use the Rondo Library, send teens to Central High, the oldest high school in Minnesota, and stroll past the Cathedral of Saint Paul and the James J. Hill House.
