About West Seventh

West Seventh runs along the Mississippi River bluffs from downtown toward Fort Snelling, following an old Native American and fur-trade path that people still call Fort Road. In the 1840s John Irvine built a landing for steamboats here, and the cow pasture he gave the city in 1849 became Irvine Park, now ringed by restored 1800s houses. German, Polish, Czech, Irish, Italian and later Mexican families settled along the street, and German brewers built breweries by the 1860s. Today neighbors visit the West 7th Library inside the community center, Czech Hall on Michigan Street and the old Schmidt Brewery, now home to artists' lofts.
