About East Bethel
East Bethel sits in the north of Anoka County, where Highway 65 runs through woods, lakes and farms. Settlers began arriving in the 1850s, and the area was a township named Bethel in 1858, a Bible word meaning house of God. It grew from about 1,300 people in 1957, when it became a village, to nearly 12,000 today, and it became a city in 1974. Its best-known place is the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve, where the University of Minnesota has studied nature since the 1940s.
