About Elkhorn
Elkhorn got its name in 1836, when Colonel Samuel Phoenix spotted a rack of elk antlers hanging in a tree, and settlers led by the Bradley brothers soon started a town on the good farmland. It became the Walworth County seat in 1846, and the county fair has been held here since 1851; it is now the biggest county fair in Wisconsin. After the Holton band instrument company moved to town in 1918, people built a band shell in 1926 for the Holton-Elkhorn band, and about 4,000 came to the first concert. Elkhorn has been called the Christmas Card Town since before World War II for the decorations around its square, and families still come downtown each year for Oktoberfest, the tree lighting and the Christmas Card Town Parade.
