About Prescott
Prescott sits on the point where the clear St. Croix River runs into the muddy Mississippi, and it is named for Philander Prescott, who came down from Fort Snelling in 1839 to build a house and store on the claim. In 1840 he got a license to run a ferry across the mouth of the St. Croix, and the town grew from there. In the steamboat days it was a busy river port for shipping, milling and the huge rafts of pine logs floated down from the north. Today families walk the River Walkway and picnic at Mercord Mill Park to watch the two rivers meet, spot eagles and barges, and stroll the old brick shops on Broad Street.
