About Lakeland
Lakeland sits on the west bank of the St. Croix River in Washington County, across the water from Hudson, Wisconsin. Some of its first settlers were the family of Captain John Oliver, a former British navy captain who arrived in 1848 and ran a ferry across the river from 1850, and the town was platted in 1849. Early neighbors left a lasting mark: Mitchell Jackson kept a farm diary that historians still use, and John T. Cyphers built his home in 1858 from an early kind of poured concrete around rough stones. Today about 1,700 people live in this river city along Interstate 94 and Highway 95, which is also home to Afton-Lakeland Elementary.
